University Bridge Fund

Focus on Proof of Principle Investments

In addition to directly investing in high growth spin-outs, the University Bridge Fund supports the progression of early-stage projects with strong commercial potential by investing in “Proof of Principle” projects.  These projects focus on achieving critical milestones in the commercialisation path and securing a route to market for high potential opportunities. This is a nimble and flexible investment mechanism to de-risk an opportunity in advance of creating a new spin-out and gives teams an early opportunity to work with Atlantic Bridge and access our global network.

Promoters of Proof of Principle projects should present a clear understanding of the market opportunity, the unmet need and the technical innovation of the solution. Typical investment amounts are up to €100,000 for projects running between 6-12 months.

In a recent interview, we spoke to Dr. Andrew Phillips, Assistant Professor at UCD about his recent experience of attracting Proof of Principle investment which is taking technology from the laboratory to a commercial product.

Atlantic Bridge has also supported several other Proof of Principle investments. Teams based at Trinity College Dublin are undertaking critical validation of novel technologies, to validate the market and catalyse the commercial translation of intellectual property.

The first of these projects is led by Dr. Craig Meskell, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. Dr. Meskell who is collaborating with William Dick, an adjunct Professor of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. This team is investigating the commercial viability of a novel power take-off for utility scale electrical power generation from ocean wave energy devices.

The second project is led by Professor Khurshid Ahmad, Chair of Computer Science. Prof. Khurshid and his team are validating a dynamic and novel approach to sentiment analysis important in the context of breaking news stories and events.
